If you look at the map close here, I almost crashed a 485ft US Navy frigate here.
I was woken up at 3am for my watch on the bridge and we were doing some kind of sonar-buoy thing (I am still not 100% clear what exactly they were trying to do, but I messed it up)..
Anyway, the chart was a very “zoomed” in chart and I thought it was much further “zoomed-out” and so was trying to figure out the scale of the chart and had to call the previous guy back out of sleep and after he had charted us “off the chart” we called it a bust and they moved on after I had figured out where we were..
Later (in port) I went back and looked at the log to where the ship actually was at (we were running dark and it was cloudy).. The ship went right between these two islands at a very fast clip.

How to get out of the military and get even

In the Navy I was a QuarterMaster, which is much different than the same named rate in the Army (which is some kind of store clerk), in the Navy a QM is the ships navigator and sits on the bridge..
I had a insane probably-child-molesting creepy guy who was in charge of my division (leading non-commissioned) and most of the time I was bored and turning into a rather bad alcoholic when we were in port.. So, I wanted out of the military, now the rub.. How do you get them to kick you out but still have a honorable discharge? Well, a lot of guys would just smoke pot, punch an officer or jump overboard (in port).. some would fake sleep-walking etc..
I just figured that instead, I would just let “my crazy go wild” and see what happens.. So, at the time I was working doing “mess-duty” which just means you have to take a month-long turn at dishes.. And because the captain liked me, I did my turn in the officers quarters.. Well, one even after dinner I “sleepwalked” all the officers nice dishes over the side of the boat.. I had great fun slinging them into the ocean..
Needless to say “failure to adapt to military lifestyle” was promptly stamped on me which entitled me to my full GI bill (after a year).. So I went to college :)
Though.. I really didn’t have to go that far and I very well could have fallen overboard.

sometimes we do things without fully thinking them through..
The lead-in: I was dating a girl who was not smart, working a job that I knew was not my thing (Meatcutter, graveyard shift) and living in a $200/month run-down apartment building in a town where you go nowhere, ever..
So, one night I went to sleep as ever, and had a dream of my future that terrified me.. It was dull boring and I was pushing a shopping cart full of goblin children through the crappy town mall with the girl now fat waddling in front of it.. In the dream I was not me, I was watching me and my eyes looked dead, no life..
I woke, up and within thirty minutes I had called the navy office and scheduled my enlistment, called my job and gave two week notice, called my landlord and said it was my last month, called my parents and told them I was joining the navy and needed a place to stay until I went away and broke up with my girlfriend.
I went away to this place with nothing but the clothes on my back, and then they took those and made me mail them home. It was great, I totally rebooted my life.. But, in retrospect I could have just moved back home and gone to college instead of wasting a year in the Navy before being discharged for failure to adapt (that is another sticky for another time)..
Moral is.. think before you leap.. though, in this instance I needed to do all this stuff while I still had the ‘fear’ in me..

I had a flight to Chicago and I arrived (as usual) early to the airport and made it through security.
Having some time to kill, I stopped at the bar in the terminal because you can smoke there and started drinking and forgot about my flight. Suddenly remembering the time, I realized my flight was due to leave in 5 minutes and so I payed up and ran to the gate. They were shutting up the concourse to the plane and it was backing out.. The guy called the plane and they pulled back up and they opened the door for me and I had to jump over a two foot gap into the plane (over a 25ft drop) and crashed into a stewardess.. Finally making it to my seat I proceeded to pass out, waking in Chicago (in January) a few hours later.
Clearly this was pre-9/11 … this would never happen now.

Hanauma bay, the remnants of a blown out volcano, great place to snorkel and look at fish. We had a lot of fun snorkeling around in the northern portion of this bay and took a lot of underwater photos.

I watched a show on these guys last night, very interesting. You get your named changed often when you enlist and get French citizenship after your five years, ages 18-40 single men of any country who speak any language (they teach you French and put you to work)
Kind of fascinating how many people are actually mercenaries still.
I always had this strange mystique about the FFL, from the show it is like many others now, just perhaps a little more hardcore.
They don’t ask many questions as most who enlist are running from something, or are romantics, or perhaps bored ex-military guys. Was funny on the show, they had some random guy from Mongolia who just showed up. (eve and I were chuckling about how he was probably running from some goat-hijacking gone bad).

ga Ueno is most famous for ninja. The Iga school of ninjutsu (art of stealth), based in Ueno City, used to be one of Japan’s two leading ninja schools during the feudal era (the Koga school in Shiga Prefecture was the other). Today, Iga Ueno attracts visitors with its excellent ninja museum.

Iga Ueno is also known as the birthplace of one of Japan’s greatest poets, Basho Matsuo, who lived during the early Edo Period. A memorial museum, his birth home and a former hermitage are some of Ueno’s Basho related attractions.

1) Take the JR Nara Line from Kyoto to Kizu (35 minutes by rapid train)
2) Take the JR Kansai Line from Kizu to Kamo (5 minutes)
3) Continue along the JR Kansai Line from Kamo to Iga-Ueno (35 minutes)

The Viking festival at Viking Village – Fjörukráin from 16th until 19th of June.

Our Vikingfestival is among the most attractive traditions here in Hafnarfjödur, and have been supported by the town of Hafnarfjördur and friendly companies, without them this festival would never take place, so endless thanks to them!
We are expecting 160 Vikings to participate in our Vikingfestival this year. Among them are 100 foreign Vikings from ten different nations and about 60 are Icelandic.

The Vikings consist of a selection of hand picked , woodcarvers, stone carvers, hand craftsmen, storytellers and Viking show- fighters to name a few of the skills of the artists that attend.
During the Vikingfestival there will be endless of happenings and entertainment which will be presented more in detail at the festival. The grand opening of the market take place 16th of June 18:00 until 22:00, followed by live music and entertainment in the Viking Village restaurant until 05:00. The following three days the market starts at 14:00 and close 20:00. After that Viking feasts starts in the Viking village restaurant followed by live music and entertainment until the early morning.

During the Viking festival the fabulous reggae band Five-4-Vibes from Netherlands along with our own house band will play on our stage.

GET the seconic oysters if you like oysters, these will blow you away they are so good. The service is good, but the place is very busy and loud. The scampi and salads are good, and the lobster looed amazing.. iwsh I could have eaten more.
